Written by: Anthony Marsella Jr. and RFS Staff
CES Boxing at Twin River Casino in Lincoln RI on February 21st was a showcase of the new generation of boxing, with the exception of course of the main event that being 3x World Champion Glenn Johnson vs. Jaime Vasquez. Jamie Vasquez is coming in off of a 15 year lay off.
To open the evening cruiserweights Alvin Varmall Jr. TKO’D Andre Ward in the 3rd round of the fight. Varmall Jr. caused damage to the right eye of Ward. Varmall Jr. landed a big series of punches topping it off with a big left hook in the third round to go to 2-0 and secure his second KO of his career.
Two local fighters KJ Lombardi and Antonio Chavez-Fernandez went at it for 4 action packed rounds, but KJ Lombardi came out on top. Lombardi utilized his jab for most of the fight that scored big on the judges’ scorecards and lead to the victory. KJ Lombardi improves to 5-0-1 and still remains undefeated.
Thomas "The Souljah" Falowo takes home the win after getting caught with a big knee kick which disqualified his opponent Jaison Polemeque. Falowo was well on his way to a win when Polemeque threw the knee strike. Falowo scored a knockdown in the second round and controlled the entire fight until Polemeque was disqualified for the illegal blow. Maybe Jasion Polemeque should take up kickboxing instead. “The Souljah” improves to 11-2 in his pro career.
In the co-main event National top boxing prospect Toka Kahn Clary TKO'D Carlos Fulgencio after the 3rd knock down of the 2nd round! Toka Kahn Clary of Pawtucket RI is signed with Top Rank Boxing Promotions out of Las Vegas Neveda. Clary looked very sharp in his “Home Coming” bout in front of all of his home town supporters. Regional Fight Sports was informed that Clary is only 3 weeks away from his next fight in Las Vegas. Toka Kahn Clary looked remarkable and moved to 10-0, 7 KO's with the victory. The 21 year old prospect is one to keep a very close eye on moving forward. Toka Kahn Clary has the eye of the champion written all over him.
In the main event 45 year old former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson known as the "Road Warrior" of boxing, took on former local New England title holder Jaime Vasquez. Johnson is best known for his famous knockout of Roy Jones Jr. in 2004. After that fight Johnson then lost to Antonio Tarver. “The Road Warrior” has fought names like Chad Dawson, Tavoris Cloud, Carl Froch, Lucien Bute, and George Groves. In his 2012 decision loss to George Groves, Johnson announced his “retirement” from the sport of boxing. Johnson made his “Comeback” in 2013 securing 2 victories.
CES BOXING FANS were treated to a special night as Johnson came to Lincoln RI, and fought on CES Boxing’s card. The former world champion Glenn Johnson stopped Jaime Vasquez in the 3rd round. Jaime took everything Glenn had to offer especially after taking the fight with just 2 weeks’ notice. The crowd couldn't believe he was still fighting back, but Jaime took one too many punches and the referee made the right decision to stop the fight. According to sources Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson is looking to be a world champion again at the age of 45 years young. On Johnson's list is current champion Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins. Hopkins and Johnson fought back in 1997 and “The Alien” came away with the victory. Johnson wants revenge!
CES BOXING and World Class Promotor Jimmy Burchfield Sr. put on great night of Boxing. They brought in national prospect and hometown hero Toka Kahn Clary, 3X world champion Glen Johnson, and had Thomas "The Souljah" Falowo on the card. CES Boxing is saying RI BOXING is here to stay!
